Descrizione del progetto:

The aim of the project is the study and reconstruction of the pictorial fragments retrieved from the early-medieval archaeological complex of San Vincenzo al Volturno (IS) (candidate UNESCO site), to recontextualize them in the original architectural spaces and in the broad range of Benevento painting between the late 8th and 11th centuries.

The contexts to which the paintings under investigation belong are: 1. the Basilica Maior; 2. the so-called crypt of Abate Giosuè; 3. the hall of prophets.

The reassembling and study of the surviving fragments and the analysis and reconfiguration of the architectural structures will allow:

1. deepening knowledge of liturgical space in the early Middle Ages and early Romanesque periods, with regards to monastic spaces with different functions (church, crypt, and transit area);

2. the analysis of the relationship between pictorial decoration, morphology, and function of the original architectural structures;

3. virtual reconstruction of the complex monastic structures;

4. building a cultural hub to disseminate knowledge, strengthen territorial identity, and community engagement;

5. drafting of a preliminary project for the musealization and valorization of the 700 thousand recovered fragments according tosustainability, sharing, and inclusiveness, aimed at generating a virtuous circuit to improve local economy.
